Mental Health in Ohio at a Glance
Data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Ohio indicates that more than 2.21 million adults in the state – over 17% of the population – have a diagnosed mental health condition. In addition, more than 43% of adults report having symptoms of anxiety and depression. Ohio’s youth are on a similar track. The Behavioral Health Barometer for the state reports that almost 17% of those aged 12-17 have experienced a Major Depressive Episode (MDE). Of further note, is that nearly 54% of the 12–17 Ohioan age group with depression did not receive any care in the most recently reported year. Both socioeconomic and geographic limitations are partly to blame. NAMI reports that as of 2025, an estimated 40% of all Ohio residents (4.8 million people) live in a community that does not have adequate access to mental health professionals. This gap has doubled in size, growing from 20% of the population (2.4 million residents) back in 2022.
Growing Focus on Ohio’s Relationship with Technology
Challenges to Ohioan wellness are also found in the form of problematic behavior regarding the use of web-enabled activities, including online gambling, day trading, gaming, social media, shopping, streaming, and emerging dependencies regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This corresponds to a notable increase in online search for “technology addiction treatment near me” in Ohio.
